Welcome to second grade at Big Hollow School! The following covers basic information on 2nd grade procedures!
2017-2018
1. Talking to the teacher
Anytime! Don't hesitate to call/email with any questions. Home-school relationship is very important in achieving the best education for your child. We would appreciate being informed of anything that might affect your child (illness, family issues, work schedules, etc.) You can contact your child's teacher or visit their webpage for email and phone number.
Also, visit our school website www.bighollow.us for news and information of what is going on at school.
2. Snack
Each day in the morning there will be a time for snack. Check with your child's teacher for special allergy related restrictions. Snack will need to be brought in by the student and is optional. Please send in healthy snacks only. Your child may also have a water bottle, but please no other drinks in the classroom.
3. Birthdays
We will celebrate each student's birthday, but edible treats of any kind are not allowed, in accordance with the district's wellness policy. Some alternative options are: pencils, stickers, goodie bags(but they will not be opened at school). You may also donate a game or book to the classroom. Summer birthdays will be celebrated in May. Invitations for birthday parties can only be passed out at school if everyone is getting one. This is a school rule!
4. Specials
Special classes include Art, Music, P.E., Computer, and library. Just a reminder: The children will need clean gym shoes for P.E. These shoes should be kept at school.
5. Lunch/Recess
Please put your child's name on his/her lunchbox when sending cold lunch. Please dress your child according to the weather. This is especially important in the winter months. They will need coats, boots, hats, gloves, and snow pants for recess. Please make sure lunch or milk money is in an envelope with the child's name and grade. Money can be added to the students cards online as well.
6.Health Problems
Please alert your child's teacher in writing with any special health problems. We also need to make sure the office has a copy.
7. Quality Work
Neat and careful work will be stressed throughout the year. Papers with careless mistakes/sloppy printing will need to be corrected. Hard work and careful concentration are lifelong skills that we will be encouraging.
8. Developmental Spelling
During writing kid's spelling is strongly stressed. Writing words the way they sound is developmentally appropriate. With practice, progress will begin to show in written expression, confidence, and pride. Grammar and punctuation learned will be incorporated into their writing.
9. Classroom Parties
We will be having 2 classroom parties during the year: Halloween and Valentine's Day. Parent volunteers will be in charge of coordinating and planning the parties. Any snacks for the party must follow the district's wellness policy and any specific classroom allergy restrictions. Communication between the volunteers and the teacher about the plans is very important. If you are unable to volunteer, but would like to help, all are welcome to attend!
